Project Pillars

Learner Support

Learners per school per grade were identified to be prepared over to Higher Education Institutions to become professionals as identified. A program was developed to support them to improve in classroom performance in the identified subjects i.e. Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Economic Management Sciences. Schools were encouraged to establish Saturday Classes in support of teaching and learning and successfully implemented thereof. Holiday classes were planned and could not takeoff due to lack of resources. Ngenelela School Support Project was successfully launched which was attended by all registered learners with their parents and guardians. This generated enthusiasm amongst local communities and parents signed pledges to support learner throughout the project. After conducting the impact of the project in concept development and application amongst learners, finding indicate drastic improvement in Mathematics, and Natural Sciences in Grade 7,8 and 9. The results for Economic Management Sciences show less improvement amongst learners in targeted grades. Amongst other reasons advanced for poor performance in the EMS stream are as follows:  No or less qualified teachers for the subject.  CAPS is a combination of subject contents which teachers were never trained on at a college level.  Lack of practical exposure to the complexities defined in the EMS CAPS document.

Teacher Development

Zacchono Foundation has adopted a teacher development model that promotes concept development and application in Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Economic Management Sciences. Active teacher involvement in deciding on the areas requiring intervention towards improved teacher professionalism, content knowledge and effective classroom management. Three subject committees ie Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Economic Sciences were established with a responsibility to develop subject planning and topics for development.
